Family-Friendly Labor Day Events in San Diego

0

Labor Day weekend signifies the end of long summer days and nights. Many people think of picnics, barbeques, fireworks, and most importantly family and friends getting together.

It also is a three day weekend where you may be trying to find something fun to do and enjoy some iconic San Diego landmarks or activities. If you are like me, I like to find a balance of fun, exciting and relaxing—enough to get my kiddo off the video game system. San Diego offers many family-friendly Labor Day events. Here are some that are on my list:

U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge

Aug. 31st – Sept. 2nd

The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge will be taking over downtown San Diego.  Master Sand Sculptors come to the city and create dimensional art and amaze everyone. There will be live bands, food trucks, crafts, entertainment for the kids and the gorgeous San Diego Bay. After you enjoy the art, you can also hit the historic U.S.S. Midway and Maritime Museum.

Del Mar Racing

Aug. 31st – Sept. 2nd

Labor Day Weekend is the conclusion of the Del Mar racing season.  There will be live music, tons of food, and entertainment for the entire family.  Sunday enjoy the Taste of New Orleans with Cajun food and music.

If you are unsure how to bet, Del Mar will be hosting seminars that will teach you the ins and outs so that you are ready for the races.

Bring the kids with you on Saturday or Sunday, and they can not only see the ponies but have some fun at the game zone and kids’ activity area.

San Diego Symphony

Join the grand finale of the San Diego Symphony’s closeout to the end of summer at the 1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular.  The evening will end with a dazzling firework display over the bay of San Diego.

San Diego Nighttime Zoo

Labor Day weekend is the end of the Nighttime Zoo event at the San Diego Zoo.  The zoo stays open until 9pm and has several extra celebrations in the evening. With live music, animal encounters, activities and more, it offers extra so even locals who go to the zoo all year long are excited by the new adventures.

SeaWorld’s Electric Ocean

Aug. 31st – Sept. 2nd

Labor Day weekend is the last to enjoy SeaWorld’s Electric Ocean Celebration until next summer. During the day enjoy all of the marine life and rides. In the evening SeaWorld tuns into a world of lights, music, and acrobatics. An incredible laser light show at the end of the evening will impress adults and children.

Beach Life

There is always a day at the beach, and in San Diego, there are so many options depending on where you live and whether you want to sunbathe, fish, surf, paddleboard or kayak. Local favorites include South Ponto Beach, Mission Bay, La Jolla Shores, Coronado Beach, and Moonlight Beach. Just remember that it being Labor Day weekend, you may want to get to the beach a little early for the perfect spot.
