A School Where Character Counts, Parents Matter, and Teachers Care: Literacy First Charter Schools

As a mom of two under 2, I already find myself pondering the best choice for my kids when it’s time for them to start school! I mean, three to four years is plenty of time to do my research and make the best choice, but with a plethora of options, how do I know I am making the right choice?

While I think I could do it, I have had the fortunate opportunity to work for Literacy First Charter Schools for the past ten years and well… the teachers are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and would do a phenomenal job of teaching my little guys. I am confident in saying that my colleagues are trained, encouraged, and supported to use creativity, flexibility, and ingenuity to make learning engaging, brain-based, exciting, and challenging.

So, I made a deal with my husband! As long as we live in San Diego the kids are going to Literacy First, if not… then we can go the homeschool route. Because in my reality, there really is no place like Literacy First. There is a magic about this place that just sparks joy!

literacy first charter schoolLocated in the heart of El Cajon, LFCS began as a K-3 program on one campus in 2001 with 5 teachers and 100 students. It was founded by a veteran teacher who has a passion for education and truly looks for the joy in learning. Along with a small but dedicated team they worked to make magic out of old desks, portable walls, used textbooks, and big ideas. LFCS made a commitment to hire staff who are passionate about teaching and incorporate research-proven techniques that work! LFCS has a developed a reputation for high test scores, satisfied parents, and students who graduate as leaders. Currently LFCS has four tuition free campuses serving K-12 students and an independent study program.

I enjoy peeking in the windows to see students learning in so many unique methods. I absolutely love catching the teacher’s transition playlists. If you don’t know what I am talking about, come take a tour (you’ll see that magic I am talking about)! Oh, and the smells! Not bad ones, amazing ones!!

Teachers are trained on the importance of color, smell, sound, and sight and the impact it has on students’ brains and the contribution they each make to the learning process. LFCS teaches to the whole student. Beginning in elementary school, students learn art, music, PE, and library. After-school programs abound, and sports teams are available from 4th-12th grade.

Even at the high school level, small class size is the core. One of the school’s precepts is that “every student is known” and this can only be accomplished in a small class setting. When our students leave for college, this idea of “being known” stands out in seniors’ reflections.

literacy first charter schoolLFCS offers an independent study program for students TK-8th grade! Families are provided yearly stipends, multiple enrichment opportunities such as group classes and field trips, and a credentialed teacher is there to assist in the journey so parents don’t have to figure it out or pay for it on their own!

Let’s face it: When it comes to our babies and deciding on which form of education is best for them, it is a big decision… it is worth it to look at what is available in your community. Great schools don’t happen by accident. They require a clear purpose, a staff that has the skills and heart to do what it takes, as well as parents and students who are invested in the learning environment.

What LFCS does works! With a diverse population of many cultures, languages, and learning needs, LFCS stands at the top with amazing test scores and a fabulous reputation in the community.
