This past Saturday, we hosted Protect & Play with Attorney Amy Hsiao of Hsiao Law. Life is unpredictable. The topic of who will raise our children, if the unexpected happens, is scary. I’ve been taught that to combat fear is to educate yourself, so attending this event was so important for the future of my family.
Here are some key takeaways that we feel EVERY parent should know:
- I’ve always known you select a legal guardian for your children and create specific instructions on how you want your children to be raised such as faith, values and experiences. What I didn’t know was you can also EXCLUDE people from taking guardianship. So you don’t have to worry about that overbearing and judgmental aunt who thinks she can parent better than you.
- Writing a will is NOT enough. In order to protect your children AND assets, the only way to avoid legal battle is to have a fully funded living Trust.
- Lawyer UP! You want to meet with a lawyer to make sure everything is in order when you pass. While we can simply write out our wishes, it’s important to make your Trust airtight to avoid probate or estate taxes and protect your child{ren}’s inheritance. We can still protect our children when we aren’t here.
- Finding the right help can ease your mind now. When you plan for your children’s futures, you’ll need to come up with a plan that will protect and guide them. Having an attorney like Amy Hsiao will do just that. They will ensure YOUR plan is honored and executed.
