5 Ways To Play On The Bay

There has never been a better time to get on the water, after all, we do live in San Diego where the options for water play are simply endless year-round. The best spot to socially distance? How about on the water with your family, or a date night sunset SUP under the Coronado Bridge? Below are my favorite companies for renting a water activity. Check them out, have fun, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
  1. Eco Boat Rentals

Hydro cycle boats have gained popularity in San Diego this year once Eco Boat Rentals opened up in the Point Loma’s Shelter Island harbor, located just across from Point Loma Seafoods (grab a bite there after your rental!). With space for up to 4 family members, it is a great way to play on the bay in the comfort of your own pedal boat. Don’t worry, it’s quite easy and you can go at your own pace through the marina. Spot sea lions on the buoy, spot sport fishing boats passing by, and simply enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of land life. Single and tandem pedal kayaks also available. https://www.ecoboatrentals.com/ + @ecoboatrentals

  1. SUP Coronado

You may have been over the Coronado bridge but have you ever been under it? SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) Coronado is run by two local sisters who love to play on the bay. Choose to simply rent a board ($40) or have an instructor paddle with you for a guided lesson (starting at $50 depending on group size). The best time to paddle in San Diego Bay is during the morning or at sunset when the bay tends to be calmer. Depart from Tidelands Park and enjoy epic views of the downtown San Diego skyline, Coronado Island, and beyond. https://www.supcoronado.com/ + @supcoronado

  1. Surf Diva Surf Lessons

For over 20 years, Surf Diva has been a household name for those looking for surf lessons in San Diego. Located at La Jolla Shores, you can book a one-hour private surf lesson for $95. In just one hour, our daughter had a dry lesson on the beach explaining ocean safety and paddle techniques, followed by an instructor taking her out to the gentle waves at La Jolla Shores. She still talks about it to this day.  The instructors are all very kind and personable. Wetsuits are provided or you can bring your own. https://www.surfdiva.com/ + @surfdiva

  1. Aolani Catamaran Sailing

The first private charter sailing catamaran to come to San Diego, and family operated, is based out of the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel and Marina and is a perfect option for special occasions on the water with larger groups. Due to current restrictions (COVID), Aolani’s current maximum capacity is 30 guests (instead of its normal 48 guest max) however if you have a larger family or a couple of households that want to rent their own private yacht for the day, this is a great option. This catamaran has 4 staterooms, 2 restrooms on board, and is a 2-hour rental minimum. Additional water toys available upon request. www.aolani.cc + @aolanicatamaran

  1. Aqua Adventures

Known for its kayak and paddleboard options, this Mission Bay staple hosts top-tier kayak rentals from sea kayaks to tandem kayaks; surf skis to outriggers. A family favorite is the hydro bikes (25$ for 90 minutes), with a tandem hydro bike available as well ($45 for 90 minutes).  Most children ages 8 and above can ride themselves as long as they can reach the pedals, otherwise, they can sit on the sideboard while Mom or Dad pedals the bike through the bay. Kayak and Paddle lessons available here as well, along with snorkel tours. The options are endless here in San Diego. https://www.aqua-adventures.com/ + @aqua_adventures
